Description: A ground up project extending the landmark Empire Studios in Mumbai and providing the envelope for a large, Dolby-certified, double storey height film mix theatre. Formed over two floors at an upper level and including foyer areas for preview audiences and clients. The machine room is housed under the rear, raked seating area with visual contact to the raised mixing level. This marked RA’s first use of structural glass for the flooring area around the console – also seen in the film mix theatres for Navketan (Mumbai) and Le Doyen (Kiev).

The fully floated, sound-isolating shell is formed with dense, solid concrete block walls, reinforced concrete raft floor and laminated lid. Due to load bearing issues, the lid is untypically floated directly off the structural frame of the external envelope and spans independently over the shell walls and floating-floor, which themselves bear on the intermediate floor. Still generally considered to have the finest film mixing acoustic in all of India. The striking interior design was passionately encouraged by an exceptionally supportive client, the charismatic Yusuf Lakdawala.
